BuilderGuru was founded on the Chesapeake in 1985 with a single promise — build well, build truthfully, build to last. Four decades later, the practice remains owner-operated and based in Annapolis, Maryland.
The world of commercial construction has changed beyond recognition since we framed our first wall. Software replaced ledgers. Subcontractors became scarce, then plentiful, then scarce again. Margins compressed. New buildings began to look, almost everywhere, the same as the buildings beside them.
We have done our best to resist the temptation of sameness. Our clients — restaurateurs and school superintendents, hospital chiefs and homeowners — come to us because they have a building in mind that does not yet exist, and they would like it to be very specifically itself. That is the work we set ourselves to. It is the work we have always done.
The pages that follow are a record of forty years of that work. We are honored that you have opened them.

William Gardiner founded BuilderGuru in 1985 with a single partner and a single project — a thousand-square-foot oyster bar on Main Street, in a town that did not yet have many. The first phone he answered was on a job site, and that has not really changed.
His son Thomas joined the practice in 2003 and now runs operations. Marcus Hale, who came to us from a heavy-civil firm, leads preconstruction. The senior project leads — eight of them — have been with the practice an average of fourteen years.
What we offer is the rarest thing in the trade: continuity. The person who quotes your project will still be on the line when something goes sideways, three years after closeout.
A building is not finished the day the doors open. It is finished the day a stranger walks in and feels at home.— William Gardiner · Founder

Affiliated practice launched for ground-up institutional work, pre-engineered metal, and select residences.
Recession years. We grew through them by holding rates flat and our standards higher. Many of our oldest client relationships date to this period.

Forty thousand projects delivered. The same family at the helm, the same standard of care, and the same phone number first answered in 1985.

The specialty arm — ground-up institutional construction, pre-engineered metal buildings, and select private residences. Where the program is unusual and the standards are uncompromising.
